Every single day, FANT creates a free space for children and young people in one of the poorest countries in the world, in which learning and laughter increase equality, health and democratic understanding.
Essentially, we organize children and young people in healthy relations through sports associations and educate them in democratic participation. In that way, we contribute to the Global Goals of UN.
The pivotal point on which FANT is centered is the local role models who inspire and support the children in their everyday lives to meet through sports, learning and laughter. The children get to know themselves and others based on democratic principles which strengthen their development and appreciation of equal status, equality, and equality of opportunity, for instance, girls’ rights. FANT is much more than sports associations. We are associations who take social and human responsibility in the local communities – and strengthen the organizational development and the competences of each individual.
The sports associations of FANT in Sierra Leone are the foundation for which more than 10,000 children and young people every day are activated through sport, learning and laughter. In that way, FANT contributes actively to the UN Global Goal 3 and Global Goal 5.
The sports associations and the sport itself are used to teach the kids how to enter into healthy relationships across social status, gender, age, ethnicity, religion etc. The concept of associations, so well-known in Denmark, contributes to a strong experience of volunteering, unity and organization. In Sierra Leone, almost all kids live troubled lives full of chores and worries. The associations create a free-space for the kids, in which there is room for fun, the chance to create friendships or freedom to dream of a better future.
We create strong communities and institutions by strengthening children and young people’s understanding of democratic principles. In that way, FANT contributes actively to the UN Global Goal 11 and Global Goal 16.
Our associations are democratic and educate our members and employees, children and young people in democratic principles and collective decision making. Every day, we strive to stimulate the understanding of fundamental democratic rights and duties from the supposition that the association functions as a ‘small democracy’. You learn, for instance, about the participation in meetings, planning and board work, and provides everybody with the possibility to contribute, express themselves and listen to others. Those are traits our members can use outside of the association as well, and it makes them active citizens with the abilities and want to participate in the local community and the strengthening of institutions on a general level.
FANT is created by people with great passion. We’re there ourselves and work in close proximity with the organizations, companies, and roles models every day, who contribute to creating permanent change. That is how FANT actively contributes to the UN Global Goal 17.
We believe that learning and laughter in the life of the sports associations is a solid basis for a better local community and a strong foundation for change in the region. Our associations are driven by local coaches and role models. They take pride in motivating children and young people to leave the streets and the hard life in the cities for good, and instead help them participating in a strong safe association where unity, friendship and one’s self-worth is applauded. We are also present in the areas where we work and that is why we can make sure that FANT’s funds are used efficiently and as close to the kids as possible. It is our goal that you sense the difference you make, and we exert ourselves all the time to improve our communication so that the work of FANT is as transparent and clear as possible.
